Lebanese Forces' lawmaker Antoine Zahra warned, from the Parliament on Tuesday, of challenging the legislative elections and annulling of their results if a mistake regarding the vote of Lebanese expatriates was not rectified.
"The law 25/2008, drafted by former minister Ziad Baroud in collaboration with president Michel Sleiman, stipulated the expats' vote in 2013; and the new law, that tackles expats in Articles 111 and 124, devoted six seats for the expatriates to be added to the already existing 128 seats in 2022, whereas the addition must be subtracted in the rounds that shall follow," Zahra said.
"Article 25 states that every other text is annulled, except for the by-elections, the events of death and resignation, and the municipal and mayoral elections, where polls must be conducted under the previous law; it did not cite the expatriates. Therefore, the invitation of expats to cast their vote is based on a void law, and is in turn void," he explained.
"I call the government to take the necessary measure and to ask the Parliament to rectify the mistake regarding the expats' vote," he stressed.
