In his speech Friday, Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun managed to be at once arrogant, patronizing and hypocritical, telling protesters it was about time they woke up and smelled the corruption - but that of course it wasn’t fair for them also to be taking aim at him.
Not to be outdone, he also called for his own protest - one for those who worship at his feet, and apparently do not see what everyone else can see: that some of the most flagrant examples of nepotism and corruption over the last few years have directly or indirectly involved his FPM group.
The ministries of energy and oil and telecommunications, which have had the misfortune to have been managed by FPM ministers over the last few years, have been among the most badly managed, neglected and manipulated for personal political and financial gains.
He also took the opportunity to lecture on the meaning of democracy, a process which he chose to ignore during his son-in-law’s promotion to “president” of his party. “Good governance” was another topic for his diatribe, with Aoun focusing on the necessity to respect the constitution and the system. Apparently it’s one rule for everyone else, and another rule for the FPM.
Again too he made suggestions for choosing a new president, knowing full well none of them will work, and continuing to hope that everyone will get tired of the lack of a leader and just resign themselves to having him. But people are no longer happy to accept a mediocre, or poor leader. They want someone sincere and democratic, who represents all, and not just his own family.
