The Central Bank issued the following statement:
"The real rates of the US dollar against the Lebanese pound are announced daily by the Central Bank based on the current trading in the market and on the exchange platform.
"Sayrafa" is the only platform that announces rates and the amount of transactions that lead to these rates.
As for the applications that announce rates without indicating the amount of operations, they are suspicious and illegal applications. These applications are leading the markets, but do not reflect their reality and their true size.
Their rates change day and night, all days of the week and during holidays, simultaneously, as if the parallel market is an organized market in the form of a stock exchange.
There are political and commercial interests behind these applications.
Judicial and security authorities have sought to seize these applications at the request of the Lebanese government.
Since many of them are located outside Lebanon, the Central Bank demanded that international Internet companies remove these applications from their networks.
The Central Bank will follow up on this matter abroad and it considers that Google and Facebook and others bear responsibility for the harm these applications cause in Lebanon. the Central Brank demands that these applications publish the official rate and the price announced by "Sayrafa" only.
On the other hand, the Central Bank will launch initiatives aimed at developing payment systems, leading to a return to electronic payment.
This will be discussed in the Central Council's next session."
