The two suicide bombers who perpetrated the deadly attack outside the Iranian Embassy earlier this week stayed at a hotel in the Beirut’s suburb of Corniche al-Mazraa, local newspaper reported on Thursday.
According to Assafir newspaper, the two assailants stayed for one day at a hotel in the UNESCO area of Beirut, holding forged Lebanese IDs “that do not mirror any fundamentalist or extremist affiliations”. The two suicide bombers checked out one hour before the attack.
The two killers, who the report assumed that are not Lebanese nationals, carried two cell phones that they did not use.
The daily reported that the two individuals had an in-depth monitoring and surveillance of the targeted embassy as they looked for any ‘loopholes’ that could facilitate their suicidal mission.
The report also said the bombers drove a stolen four-wheel drive vehicle in the attack which was handed over to them only meters away from the Iranian Embassy.
Based on the presumed scenario, one attacker who was wearing an explosive belt stepped out of the vehicle and blew himself up at the entrance of the embassy to pave way for the booby-trapped SUV.
Coincidently, a water tanker stood in the way of the suicide car bomber. Then, a police officer approached the second attacker, prompting him to blow himself up.
According to the report, security forces are keen on conducting DNA tests for the bodies’ remains that were recovered from the scene in a bid to identify the two suicide bombers.
