This was the straw that broke the camel’s back. The Naameh landfill overflows with waste as residence of areas near the landfill block the roads before Sukleen garbage trucks transporting more and more waste.
This is an environmental emergency for the landfill has become a source of toxic fumes, which incited the Sukleen Corporation to stop collecting and treating waste from Beirut and Mount Lebanon, asking citizens to firmly close their garbage bags so as to avoid the proliferation of bacteria.
The repercussions of such a step are obviously catastrophic, as the rest of Lebanon suffers from horrid smells, overflowing waste bins and tainted scenery.
In conjunction with the crisis, the Municipality Union held a conference in an attempt to find a temporary solution to the situation, until the state intervenes with a serious and final resolution. The Union suggested that citizens and municipalities sort and collect the waste, in order to transport them using the municipalities’ trucks.
Such a situation calls for swift actions for it affects the lives and health of the residence of the Shhar, Aramoun and Naameh areas, who are experience a different kind of hell on earth. How many Lebanese are to suffocate, while awaiting radical solutions for the state?
