Lebanese will be able to enjoy a thrilling experience next Thursday, and for a very limited period of time, a second of its kind in the history of our wonderland.
The famous Lebanese song “politicians bailed out on Lebanon” will be reverberating hard and loud.
Lebanon has no president, no news there, but the country is soon to lose its parliament Speaker and prime Minister as the two head to Cairo next Thursday to attend the inauguration of the new Suez Canal, in the presence of major Arab and Foreign figureheads.
The event marks the second time where the presidential seat is left vacant while the Prime and Parliament Speaker spearhead the presidential duties abroad. The first time marked the participation of Berri and former PM Fouad Siniora in the Doha conference that resulted in an exceptional agreement between the opposition and the majority.
However, our leaders will be hardly missed this time, the power cuts and trash crisis are enough diversions to stamp out the vacuum. They are the trails the corrupted political class -- that reduced the republic to a farm-- has left behind. It has looted its riches and violated its laws, predisposed the people to sectarian gerrymandering instead of constitutional principles, and favored personal claims over patriotism.
Ironically, the country forges ahead amid the dismemberment of the constitutional system as cries of joy burst in town and the jubilant crowds swarm up the streets and summer festivals.
Lebanon has been missing its head for nearly a year and three months, but his feckless leaders had lost their sound judgment the day they stepped into office.
And if the presidency were to be settled some day, it would like be achieved through foreign mediation for the power that faintly greets our homes for numerable hours each day and the stifling smell of our mounting trash can do little to jumpstart the dormant conscience of our leaders.
