Jordanian Monarch Abdullah II met Sunday afternoon at the Royal Palace in Amman with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, who briefed him on current developments in the region. Bilateral talks tackled a number of issues related to mutual relations and cooperation between Lebanon and Jordan in particular, and Arab-Arab relations in general.
The Jordanian King underlined the strong relations with Lebanon, marking Speaker Berri's prominent role in this regard, and stressing the expansion of areas of cooperation between Lebanon and Jordan to the benefit of both countries.
In a statement by House Speaker Berri's Press Office, it indicated that both sides discussed "the common concern, which is the issue of displaced Syrians, where they highlighted the need to communicate with the Syrian government, whether from Lebanon or Jordan, to secure the return of the Syrian brethrens to their country, and agreed to coordinate and communicate in this respect."
"Talks during the encounter, which was attended by Lebanese Ambassador to Jordan Tracy Chamoun, also pinned great importance on the Naseeb crossing that could be of great benefit to Lebanon, Syria and Jordan," the statement added.
Furthermore, Speaker Berri explained to King Abdullah the issue of Lebanon's southern maritime border with occupied Palestine. During the conversation, the Jordanian Monarch disclosed that he would visit the United States, whereby the House Speaker urged him to raise the matter with the Americans in terms of assisting in maritime border demarcation as part of the solution adopted in the land borders and the Blue Line.
On another level and within the context of expanding cooperation between both countries, King Abdullah referred to the existence of surplus electricity in Jordan. Speaker Berri, in turn, pointed to Lebanon's surplus water capacity, questioning about the cost of electricity if Lebanon wished to benefit from it, to which the Jordanian King replied: "We welcome this, so you have surplus water and we can exchange electricity for water with you."
