Foreign Minister, Gebran Bassil, welcomed the Russian ambassador to Lebanon, Alexander Zasypkin, who said after the meeting that "discussions have touched on the preparations for the visit of President Michel Aoun to Russia. The date of said visit will be announced soon."
"This visit is a major political event and an important platform for developing Russian-Lebanese cooperation in all fields," the diplomat said.
"We stressed the need to intensify political dialogue between the two countries to find peaceful solutions to the conflicts in the region, to cleanse the atmosphere and rule out new escalation, and to intensify efforts to provide assistance for the return of the displaced by the international community," he said.
Asked about the inactivation of the Russian initiative for the displaced, the Russian ambassador said: "As I have made clear over and over again, Russia is doing a lot of work inside Syria; I mean by that the provision of proper conditions and reconstruction works. We call on all the parties to participate in that process, but the position of western countries is now clear."
The Russian ambassador denied that "the return of displaced people be waiting for reconstruction works because the process is being carried out by Russian efforts and the efforts of some cooperating parties."
Bassil also held a series of diplomatic meetings with the ambassadors of Qatar, Australia, Italy, Spain and the Czech Republic.
