Winter is almost upon us, and much like our skin, our hair and scalp suffer from the drop in temperature and loss of moisture in the air.
So to keep your locks looking just as lustrous as they do in the summer months here are 10 changes you need to make to your hair care routine this winter.
1. Moisturise your scalp
With falling humidity, central heating and time spent wearing itchy hats, it’s no wonder our scalps end up paying the price. Flaky scalp is an embarrassing, yet common, winter hair issue that can easily be sorted. Before bed, apply hair oil to your scalp and massage in - we recommend coconut, castor, almond or olive oils.
2. Use a smoothing cream
Use a smoothing finishing cream to tame frizzy, dry-looking hair. Look out for ingredients like avocado oil which will seal the hair, nourish your strands and boost shine for healthy winter hair.
3. Try no-heat hairstyles
Instead of using your straightener or curling iron try incorporating no-heat hairstyles a few times a week to save your hair from extra damage. Try washing your hair the night before and twist, braid or put it in a bun and then sleep on it. Take it out the next morning, and your hair will be dry, styled and ready to go. Saving time and your hair!
4. Use a hair mask
Treat your hair to a deep moisturising mask once a week to boost hydration. To combat dryness a regularly used mask is perfect. Look for ingredients like shea butter and olive oil. Your rehydrated hair will be noticeably smoother and shinier, and easier to style. FYI you can even make your own!
5. Get regular haircuts
Regular trims are a great way to keep your hair in good health during the winter months. We recommend that every six to eight weeks you just get a light dusting of the ends to help reduce the chance of dry, splitting ends.
6. Drink lots of water
This one’s easy to forget, your body still needs to remain hydrated even if it is icy outside. Keep drinking water like it’s summer, and you will stay hydrated on the inside and this will help to retain the moisture in your hair.
7. Minimise washing your hair
Washing your hair only two to three times a week will prevent your hair from drying out too much. And always make sure you dry your hair before leaving the house. Not only because you might get a cold, but the moisture in your hair combined with the cold air will add further damage to your hair by making it more brittle and dry. Basically dry shampoo is your now your best friend.
8. Use a natural boar bristle hairbrush with a wooden handle
It is great for circulation and can breath new life into dull and dry hair. Brush your hair in the morning and night to give your hair a moisture burst.
9. Argan Oil
Argan oil is a great product to use during cold spells as it moisturises the hair instantly. Make sure the oil is not too heavy for your hair type. The general rule is the finer the hair the lighter the oil. Our top tip is keep a small bottle in your bag and use it to spruce up your ends as and when you need.
10. Eat well
Your diet plays a big role in your hair health. Have an omelet for breakfast, have a handful of almonds for snacks, or add a cup of leafy green vegetables, like spinach, to your lunch or dinner. Eat fish like salmon and tuna regularly.
May the odds be forever in your hair’s favour as the long winter approaches … Good luck!
