Chinese Ambassador to Lebanon Wang Kejian stressed in an interview on Thursday the importance of economic, trade and investment cooperation between China and Lebanon, calling on the Lebanese to create a climate conducive to business, and to take the necessary steps to attract Chinese companies to invest in Lebanon.
"In recent years, economic and trade cooperation has developed steadily. China is Lebanon's largest trading partner since 2013, and the pattern of trade is steadily improving," he said, adding that "the governments of both countries and the concerned parties do encourage Lebanese exports to China."
"On another level, the reactions to China's belt initiative were positive. The Chinese and Lebanese governments have signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in this area," Kejian explained.
Tackling investment, the diplomat said the Chinese embassy was encouraging big Chinese companies to visit Lebanon to discuss bilateral trade cooperation opportunities.
As for the means to help Lebanon in the development of its vital sector, the Chinese ambassador announced that his country granted economic aid to Lebanon. "And because of the latter's hosting of a large number of displaced, the Chinese government has increased its support for humanitarian projects."
Finally, in response to a question about China's low investment in Lebanon in comparison with Africa and some Arab countries, Kejian concluded that the circumstances in Lebanon were different from those in Africa and the Arab countries and comparison is thus invalid.
