Caretaker Interior and Municipalities Minister, Raya Hassan, revealed on Friday that an investigation has been opened in some places that have witnessed unrest during the past days, such as the Ring and Riad El-Solh Square in Downtown Beirut.
"We have information that we have placed at the discretion of the Public Prosecutor to take appropriate judicial action," she said.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Independence Day celebration at the Ministry of Defense earlier today, Hassan said she was "concerned about the ongoing political situation in the country and the lack of common grounds between the political parties and the demonstrators; thus, resulting in uncertainty about where the country is going."
She pointed to the need for dialogue and reaching a common denominator between the State authority and the demonstrators, expressing concern that "the political parties and the demonstrators will not compromise, which will affect the country and the demonstrators and the future of generations."
Meanwhile, Hassan categorically denied that the security forces have used excessive force to disperse the demonstrators, stressing that "the instructions were very clear not to use force with the protesters, while preserving the need to keep away from road closures, for it is my responsibility as interior minister to open the roads."
