All 24 Indian crew rescued from tanker set ablaze off Oman after US strike

All 24 Indian seafarers aboard a tanker that caught fire off the coast of Oman after being struck by US forces have been rescued and evacuated safely, Indian authorities said.Crew members of the unladen tanker had sent distress messages saying the vessel was on fire and sinking.Monday's incident is the latest involving commercial shipping in Gulf waters, where the Iran war and US-led enforcement measures have sharply increased risks to maritime traffic. It comes against the backdrop of tensions involving Iran, the US and Israel, which have disrupted shipping routes and increased military activity in and around the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz.A fire broke out on the tanker MT Marivex at about 1330 local time while 24 Indian sailors were on board, Opesh Kumar Sharma of India's ministry of ports, shipping and waterways told reporters on Monday.Sharma said preliminary reports indicated that all the seafarers were safe and that authorities were coordinating across government agencies to ensure their security. The government did not elaborate on the cause of the fire.According to Indian media reports, the crew was evacuated by helicopter operated by Omani authorities and taken to Masirah Island.Marivex had previously been sanctioned by US authorities for alleged Iran links, the Reuters news agency reported. The All India Seafarers Union, which represents Indian merchant sailors, said it received distress communication from a crew member of the Palau-flagged tanker shortly after the fire broke out and remained in contact with the crew and authorities throughout the rescue effort. The Forward Seamen's Union of India, another such body, called it a "matter of serious concern" as it urged swift action to ensure the safety of the crew, support for their families and security of seafarers. Both unions confirmed that the crew had been rescued and reported safe.US Central Command later said in a statement that American forces "disabled an unladen oil tanker" in the Gulf of Oman on 8 June "after the vessel violated the ongoing blockade against Iran by attempting to sail to an Iranian port"."An F/A-18 Super Hornet from USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) fired a precision munition into the ship's engineering and steering spaces after the crew failed to comply with directions from US forces," said the statement, adding: "Marivex is no longer sailing to Iran."Media reports said the vessel was empty at the time of the incident and was located south of the Strait of Hormuz - a chokepoint through which roughly one-fifth of the world's energy supplies pass in normal times.

Rescuers Race to Reach Trapped After Powerful Quake in Southern Philippines

Rescuers searched the rubble on Tuesday of a collapsed building in the southern Philippine city of General Santos, the worst hit by a powerful earthquake that has killed at least 37 people and injured hundreds, to reach ‌two people still believed to be trapped inside.Regional fire officer Edgar Tanawan, who is leading the operation, told Reuters two people had been pulled out alive from the commercial building, housing a grocery store and other businesses, but a third was found dead. Scanners have so far detected no signs of life from the remaining two, he added."It’s difficult to accept, as a mother, that my son is still trapped there,” said Dioslinda Deluvio, distraught as she waited outside the building for news of her son. “I don’t know… it’s very hard to accept.“My only call is to have him retrieved today so we can be at peace," said the 65-year-old mother. The 7.8-magnitude quake, which triggered tsunami warnings across several countries, struck early on Monday morning about 20 km (12.4 miles) off the coast of Sarangani province, with tremors felt strongly across Mindanao and as far as the city of Manado, 420 km (261 miles) away on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.Officials said they hoped the death toll would not rise further as search and rescue operations continued, with more than 400 people injured and four still missing.Scenes of devastation were visible in parts of General Santos, which is home to more than 700,000 people and now under a state of calamity, with several buildings collapsed and debris strewn across streets beneath a tangle of toppled power lines and utility posts.Philippine disaster officials scoured damaged ‌buildings to assess damage and worked to restore power and water for the thousands of residents affected by the disaster. The quake came eight months after the country suffered its deadliest tremor in 12 years, when a shallow 6.9 magnitude quake hit off the central island of Cebu, killing 79 people. The Philippines experiences hundreds of quakes each year and sits on tectonically complex parts of the Pacific "Ring of Fire", a seismically active belt stretching from South America to the Russian Far East.Schools, which had just reopened on Monday after a long break, remained closed as authorities checked the condition of school buildings, thousands of which sustained minor to severe damage, Rafaelito Alejandro, head of the office of civil defence, told DZBB radio.A video shared by one school of the moment the quake struck showed a large group of children sitting on a floor swaying violently from side to side, some hugging teachers, before they fled en masse as a makeshift shelter collapsed behind them. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded 23 strong aftershocks, with the strongest measuring magnitude 6.7, forcing some residents to spend the night in evacuation centres and tents. In General Santos and Sarangani, patients were treated in makeshift tents as officials worked to ensure hospitals were safe, Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa told DZBB, adding the restoration of power was critical as outages limited access to sensitive and sophisticated treatments needed by patients.

For the First Time, Lebanon Files Complaint Against Iran at the UN Security Council

Lebanon’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants deposited an official letter addressed to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council, containing a formal complaint filed by Lebanon against Iran.In an unprecedented diplomatic move, Lebanon submitted an official complaint to the United Nations accusing Tehran of violating the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, interfering in Lebanon’s sovereign decision-making, and dragging the country into a devastating war against the will of the state. The complaint, which has become an official document in the Security Council and the General Assembly, challenges the Iranian narrative regarding the killing of Iranian diplomats in Beirut, and denies that the Iranian embassy coordinated with Lebanon’s Foreign Ministry regarding their transfer to the “Ramada” hotel. It also states that some of the deceased were not officially registered as diplomats, in violation of the Vienna Convention.According to the complaint submitted by Lebanon’s ambassador to the UN, Ahmad Arafa, it asserts Lebanon’s right to hold Iran internationally responsible for repeated breaches of its obligations and for actions that contradict international norms, including dragging Lebanon into a destructive war that resulted in thousands of casualties, mass displacement, and severe destruction, as well as territorial losses. The complaint also alleges involvement by Iranian security bodies, including the Revolutionary Guard, in unlawful actions that led to widespread destruction and regional instability. The document further claims Iran failed to comply with Lebanese decisions regarding its ambassador in Beirut and accuses it of continued interference in Lebanon’s internal affairs. The complaint is now registered as an official UN document under the reference S/2026/343.

Hani: Lebanon’s priority is ceasefire and ending attrition

Minister of Agriculture Nizar Hani said that "the past period was marked by diving into technical and military details," noting that "Lebanon’s current effort is focused on stopping attrition, while the Israeli side is imposing negotiations under fire and continuing attempts to achieve field gains and control high hills in southern Lebanon."In an interview on the program "Ahdath" on Sawt Kull Lubnan radio, he stressed that "Lebanon’s main demand from the beginning has been a ceasefire in order to reach sustainable solutions and security stability." He affirmed that "Lebanon is exerting pressure with its friends, led by the United States, to achieve this goal, especially as security, social, and economic pressures require a swift and final solution," expressing hope that "negotiations will proceed at a faster pace and that hostilities will stop."He also pointed out that "the American mediator’s close follow-up and high-level engagement with the Lebanese file is a positive indicator, as President Trump is personally involved in the matter," adding that "the American side emphasized in yesterday’s negotiations the importance of Lebanon’s territorial independence."On the issue of displacement, Hani said that "despite challenges and limited resources, the government has managed the displacement crisis well, but international support has not been sufficient." He revealed that "relevant ministries are preparing to launch a new humanitarian appeal at the beginning of June to request support to meet humanitarian needs," noting that "part of the aid will be directed to host communities."He also said that "this government has taken decisive decisions unanimously in a democratic atmosphere," considering that "calls to bring down the government by the Secretary-General of Hezbollah were unrealistic, especially since the party’s ministers are part of the government."Regarding the draft general amnesty law, Hani expressed optimism that all parties could reach an agreement on the contentious points, particularly those related to army martyrs. As for areas affected by Israeli attacks, the Minister of Agriculture said they are estimated at around 60,000 hectares out of 250,000, noting that these lands account for 22.5% of Lebanon’s total agricultural land, and have no real alternative.
