Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus “only got married as a last-ditch attempt to make the relationship work”, claim friends.
The couple were together on and off for 10 years, but split up this weekend just eight months after getting married.
Now, sources close to the pair say they fear that the wedding was the A-list couple’s attempt to make the relationship permanent after years of ups and downs, The Sun reports.
“Liam and Miley love each other a lot, but they’re incredibly different people and at times have struggled to make things work,” says the insider.
“They had problems for years, a lot of secret break-ups - but everyone thought that the wedding would make things right.
“In the end it seemed to us like the wedding was like a Band-Aid that was trying to stick over the cracks in the relationship.
“Even the wedding was very much on her terms - in Tennessee with her parents - and not a reflection of them both.
“They just weren’t right for each other.”
Liam and Miley’s publicists have been contacted for comment.
The Hollywood couple met in 2009 on a movie set, and got engaged in 2012. They split after that, only to get back together in 2016, and got married in December last year.
After the wedding, Miley revealed she still considered herself “pansexual”, would “never be faithful” and hated being called a “wife”.
“My relationship is unique. And I don’t know that I would ever publicly allow people in there because it’s so complex, and modern, and new that I don’t think we’re in a place where people would get it,” she told Elle magazine.
“I mean, do people really think that I’m at home in a f***ing apron cooking dinner? I’m in a hetero relationship, but I still am very sexually attracted to women.”
She continued: “I have a new song, Never Be Me, and the chorus says, ‘If you’re looking for faithful, that’ll never be me. If you’re looking for stable, that’ll never be me.
“If you’re looking for someone that’ll be all that you need, that’s never going to be me.’”
Miley and Liam announced their split this weekend, with Miley’s rep telling People magazine, “Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time.
“Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers.
“They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy.”
Miley was spotted kissing The Hills star Kaitlynn Carter the next day - who only split from her husband, Brody Jenner, earlier this month.
