Liam Payne has spoken candidly about his battle with alcohol addiction and revealed Russel Brand helped him become sober.
Speaking of his battle and Russell's support, the 1D star, 26, said: 'I had a thing with drink, and it was a guy called Chip Somers who got me sober. I was sober for about a year and visited Russell Brand. We went down to meetings together.'
The funnyman, 44, was a patron of the Focus 12 treatment centre, founded by Chip, 64, however the centre closed down due to financial issues.
Discussing his mental health, he said: 'As Strip That Down came out I was almost as afraid of success as I was failure, which isn't a comfortable place to be in life because you're not really sure what you're doing.
'For anybody who's having a problem with mental health, the best thing to do is speak to someone. We're all as crazy as the next person.'
'I was at a point where I was too young to stop drinking and it turned my social life upside down. It was very lonely...
'Many things in my life went up, but many things went down at the same time. It was about pressing that reset button and -realising you could cope without it.'
Russell is famously sober after battling drink and drug addiction. At 14, he suffered from bulimia before leaving home at 16 and starting to use illegal drugs including cannabis, LSD, and ecstasy.
He said: 'I hit rock bottom in 2003 with an addiction to heroin, which had cost me a job at MTV, a radio show, friends and girlfriends...
'I'd been doing drugs since age 19 and was a heroin addict for four years. Luckily, my (then-) manager and friend Chip Sommers stepped in, telling me I'd wind up either in a prison, lunatic asylum or graveyard. So I went to a 12-step program.'
Prior to discussing his sobriety, Liam revealed he will 'go down' to his ex Cheryl's house to see his son Bear on Christmas.
The singer told how he was looking forward to some quality time with his son, two, over the festive season and thinks he will cook them all a Christmas dinner as it brings him 'back to normality'.
He also poked fun at his ex's hilarious gift gaffe as he hinted that things are very amicable between them.
Speaking on This Morning, he said: I'm going to go down and see Bear and maybe cook a Christmas dinner. I like to do Sunday roasts, brings you back to normality.
'I'm at home with my girlfriend at the minute but we're going to go down and have some food and chill out.'
He added: 'It's the first time he [Bear] really gets Christmas now. I want to see if he really gets unwrapping presents this year. Otherwise it'll just be Cheryl by the tree again.
'I can really remember it from last year, she wrapped them all up and then unwrapped them, I was just sat there going "Right, what is this?" '
Liam and his new girlfriend, Texas native Maya Henry have been inseparable since going public with their relationship in September, following his split from Cheryl in 2018.
