This wife had enough of calling her husband home from his local bar.
So instead, the British woman brought the bar home, spending at least $24,219 (USD), or about £18,450, to build and outfit the watering hole.
Jayne Tapper built the aptly named "Doghouse Inn" pub in her backyard to encourage her husband, Paul, to spend his nights at home, rather than his local watering hole.
Now, the two chum it up together over pints every night.
"My husband had always loved popping down to our local [pub], and I could never seem to keep him at home," says Jayne, a nurse. "And so I got thinking - why not create my own pub, become my own landlady?"
Paul, an engineer, was out most nights at a bar in his town of Newton Abbot in Devon. So in an effort to spend more time with her husband, Jayne got to work on building the bar. They started by leveling out the yard, then building the wood-lined cabin. The two furnished it using trinkets they found online for resale. They completed the look with a church pew, which cost about $131 USD.
And, the bar wouldn't have been complete without an arcade game, so they dropped another $853 on a Space Invaders-type game. That brought the cost of the whole project up to at least $24,000, though Jayne says she's still finding decorations here and there to adorn the pub.
The couple has three grown kids - Tom, 31, Lorren, 24, and Jack, 26 - who also visit the at-home pub. Sometimes they even bring their drinking buddies over.
In the end, the Doghouse Inn ended up being not only for Paul, but the whole family, Jayne says.
"It's not just become a man-cave as such for Paul," she says. "I love using it too and I'd quite happily spend most nights in there."
