The Lebanese Presidency's Press Office issued the following statement on Friday:
“His Excellency the President of the Republic received this afternoon the Attorney-General of the Court of Cassation, Judge Ghassan Oweidat.
Various judicial matters, especially in light of the continuing dispute between the Beirut Bar Association and the Supreme Judicial Council, were discussed. This negatively affects the regular judicial work, the right to grievance, and the administration of justice.
During the meeting, His Excellency the President referred to the need to achieve full justice in the crime of the Beirut Port explosion on August 4, 2020, “We are on the verge of a few days from the first memorial of this human and urban catastrophe, which left scars in the body of the country and among me, in addition to very citizen, especially the families of the innocent victims whose lives were lost or engulfed with wounds or the loss of a precious livelihood”.
In this context, and with his keenness on the course of the investigation and its confidentiality and the authority of the judicial investigator’s discretion, His Excellency the President of the Republic expressed his absolute willingness to testify in the event that the judicial investigator decided to listen to him pursuant to Article 85 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, considering that “No one is above justice, no matter how high they are, and justice is achieved by the competent judiciary, under which the guarantees of both judges and litigants are available.”
