Minister of Interior Bassam Mawlawi visited Bekaa on Saturday, his first visit after assuming his ministerial duties.
His first stop was the Regional Command Center of the ISF, where he met with senior officers of the ISF, in the presence of Colonel Rabih Mejaes, Commander of the Regional Forces in the ISF.
Mawlawi then inspected twenty tons of ammonium nitrate seized by the Baalbek Judicial Detachment, which were found in trucks.
Mawlawi was briefed on the seized material after the truck was transported from Baalbek to a safe area in Bednayel plain.
After examining the seized material, Mawlawi said: "We went to Baalbek, and we closely examined the situation after being informed this morning that 20 tons of ammonium nitrate had been transported from Baalbek to Bednayel plain, and this move came after Prime Minister Najib Mikati informed us, and he is following up on the issue with us, so we set out to closely examine the situation, and the security forces had transferred this quantity from Baalbek to a safer area."
Mawlawi added, "I am here to follow up on the investigation, and I will not reveal any names or detainees. I am here to point out the work of the security services as well as their vigilance and wisdom, and they are doing their role to protect the citizen amid these difficult circumstances in terms of material, logistical, economic and social aspects."
Mawlawi gave his instructions to conduct a comprehensive examination and survey of the area that poses a threat to the safety of citizens, "and in order to know the assets in this area as in all of Lebanon."
"We must also do our best to move these materials to a safer place that is not exposed to heat or anything that could cause a disaster. We are following up on this issue with the Director-General of the ISF, Major General Imad Othman, and Prime Minister Mikati. I came here to be among the citizens and closely follow up on the investigations to protect them."
