Former Prime Minister Tammam Salam issued the following statement:
"Based on the great constitutional entitlement we are facing, which is the general elections in May,
Amid the current situation in the country in terms of deterioration and collapse, we must make way for a serious change by providing an opportunity for new faces, and young and honest people that have pure national goals.
Out of respect for the demands of the rebellious people seeking change, who deserve to be given an opportunity to follow the progress of nation-building with new and ambitious ideas, methods, and practices, I announce my refusal to run in the parliamentary elections, and that I will stay in the heart of Beirut near its good people and contribute to everything that leads to rebuilding the country, according to the National Accord Document, the Taif Agreement, and the Lebanese Constitution, a guarantee of sovereignty and independence."
