“A UNIFIL peacekeeper has tested positive for coronavirus, the soldier was completely isolated at the UNIFIL Hospital in Naqoura, and all precautions were taken to prevent the spread of the virus", United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) Spokesperson Andrea Tenenti announced in a statement on Monday.
“The infected peacekeeper had returned from leave on 15 March 2020, and in accordance with our established and new medical procedures for vacationers, he was immediately placed in quarantine at the UNIFIL hospital in Naqoura. It is reported that the patient does not have any symptoms and is in good health,” the statement read.
“Four other soldiers who were in direct contact with this confirmed case have also been quarantined since the peacekeeper returned from his leave abroad. The results of the tests were negative for three of them (meaning that they are not infected with the virus), while the result of the examination of the fourth peacekeeper has not yet been released,” the statement added.
“The four soldiers will remain in quarantine in accordance with UNIFIL procedures.
Since the beginning, UNIFIL had taken all precautions and followed the approved protocol, including quarantine and isolation, in line with the WHO guidelines. We are in contact with the Lebanese health authorities and the Lebanese leadership and with the United Nations headquarters in New York to do what is necessary," the statement underlined.
