Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison delivered the following message on the the first anniversary of the Beirut port explosion:
"One year has passed since the catastrophic explosion in Beirut.
Since that dreadful day, the strength and resilience of the Lebanese people has been tested - and it continues to be as the world responds to a global pandemic.
Australia is home to many thousands of Australians of Lebanese descent. Through them, our countries are bound by loving ties of family, friendship and fellowship.
For Lebanese Australians, this anniversary was always going to be a time of sadness - and I know it will be even more so with the many who are unable to attend commemorative services due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Lebanese Australians will instead pray privately and reach out to family friends, here and in Lebanon, with messages of love and kindness. As a nation, we stand with you during this time.
To the people of Lebanon, we honour the memory of those you have lost and share in your anguish and heartbreak. We pray for justice for the victims and there will be better days for this timeless and beautiful land.
Australia stands alongside you in your pursuit of a future of peace, safety and prosperity.
May your strength as a people - undimmed and enduring - be an ongoing sources of hope and courage."
