Speaker of the House, Nabih Berri, on Tuesday sounded the alarm on Israel's plan to initiate the construction of a wall in a disputed territory along the Lebanese border with occupied Palestine.
"UNIFIL has been informed of Israeli's plans to begin the construction process towards the end of January, 2018, despite Lebanon's refusal," Berri said in a speech he delivered earlier on Tuesday at the opening session of Tehran's conference hosting the Parliamentary Union of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
Berri went on to deem the Israeli plan as part of the "deal of the century"; thus, he pushed in his speech for solidarity and unity among Muslims "in order to face the challenges and aggressions against Palestine, and to defend the causes of Islam."
Berri reiterated his call to close Arab embassies in Washington in response to the US President's decision to transfer the US embassy in Palestine to Jerusalem. He also mentioned the need to stop all negotiations related to the "peace process", pending a clear statement on the cessation of hostilities and commitment to International Security Council resolution #2334.
Furthermore, the House Speaker stepped up calls for the reinforcement of the Palestinian resistance, and called for the cancellation of Oslo agreement.
For his part, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani also delivered a speech at the inauguration of the conference, highlighting the paramount importance of pursuing the fight against extremism and terrorism.
"Islamic countries need more efforts to modernize their democracy; however, the West has a mistaken view on the lack of connection between Islam and democracy," Rouhani said.
The Iranian president also strongly condemned the US president's decision to transfer the US embassy to Jerusalem. He affirmed that the holy city was the ultimate priority of Islamic action.
