Mohammad al-Moghrabi, a Lebanese man in his 80s, lives under the Fiat Bridge in Beirut and earns a living by selling books there. He studied engineering, but then his life took a turn for the worst, and the road became his home!
Thanks to a number of philanthropists who used to visit al-Moghrabi and give him books for free, he was able to increase his book collection, which reflected positively on his livelihood and enabled him to survive.
However, al-Moghrabi did not expect that his modest library under the bridge would, one night, be set on fire! It is not known whether the fire was arson or just an accident, but the result remains the same, which is that the man has now no “home” or “work”. Although the road under the bridge was never a legitimate home that would provide comfort and safety for its occupant, nor a healthy place to work, but al-Moghrabi accepted this simple life and was happy.
Faced with this tragic reality, Political Pen, which is an independent media outlet, reached out to help al-Moghrabi out of its belief that “it is better to be unborn than untaught,” and out of its respect and admiration for this man. They launched a GoFundMe page to bring al-Moghrabi’s library back to life, make it better than before, and help him recover his burned book collection.
