Seven people, including three in critical condition, were injured in a suspected gas explosion on a beach in the U.S. state of Hawaii, according to the Maui County Sheriff's Department and police.

The explosion caused a pile of debris at Wailer on Kaanapali Beach, a popular tourist area with a string of white-sand hotels and condominiums. It is a few miles north of downtown Lahaina, which was almost completely burned to the ground in a 2023 wildfire.

The seven injured range in age from 18 to 74, police said. Two of the injured people were transported to the island of Oahu for treatment, police spokeswoman Alana Pico said.

The Maui Police Department said there was no need to evacuate people from the surrounding area, and initial investigations indicated that liquefied petroleum gas, which supplies barbecue grills in the resort's common area, was the cause of the explosion.
