At least six people were killed in a clash between rival groups of gold miners carrying dynamite in northwestern Bolivia, police reported.
A powerful explosion shook the Yani mining camp when the two groups clashed over access to a gold mine near the mountainous town of Sorata, about 150 kilometers northwest of the country’s administrative capital, La Paz, according to local police officer Colonel Günther Agudo. The remote area is home to numerous gold deposits.
“We are continuing our rescue efforts,” Agudo stated.
Authorities said prosecutors had arrived at the scene. The pre-dawn explosion destroyed the mining community, leveling several homes and cutting off electricity.
