President of the Republic Joseph Aoun reaffirmed Lebanon’s commitment to UN Security Council Resolution 1701 during a meeting with a US Congressional delegation led by Senator Angus King and US Ambassador Lisa Johnson. He stressed that the Lebanese Army is fully implementing the ceasefire understanding of November 2023, despite continued Israeli violations and the occupation of five strategic hills. He called for a full Israeli withdrawal to allow the Lebanese Army to deploy along the southern border.

President Aoun also briefed the delegation on Lebanon’s coordination with UNIFIL and ongoing efforts to reach 10,000 troops in the south. He noted that UNIFIL plays a vital humanitarian and security role and that its mandate should be extended.

On domestic issues, Aoun reiterated his commitment to fighting corruption and upholding judicial accountability. He also highlighted his recent agreement with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to begin disarmament of Palestinian camps in Beirut by mid-June.

Aoun welcomed Egypt’s invitation to attend the opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum on July 3 and praised bilateral relations.

The President also met with members of the “Meeting Foundation for Religious and Social Dialogue,” emphasizing unity, values, and inclusive national discourse. Separately, he received MP Stephane Douaihy and former Minister Raed Khoury for discussions on political and economic developments.
