Aoun Calls for Decisive Digital Reform: "We Must Correct This Equation"

During the recent "Smart Government: Diaspora Expertise for Lebanon" conference, President Michel Aoun emphasized the critical need for Lebanon to embrace digital progress. He stated that the main obstacle was a matter of decision, and declared that Lebanon has now made that decision. “We can no longer stay behind and on the sidelines of progress, or strangers to the digital economy,” he affirmed.
President Aoun candidly addressed the persistent delays in adopting smart governance, attributing them to the reluctance to confront corruption. “Everyone knows what the problem is, and it is time to have the courage to speak it openly,” he said. According to the President, smart governance continues to be postponed to keep citizens’ affairs subject to the whims of some corrupt individuals. Furthermore, digital transformation is being deliberately hindered to maintain the paralysis of certain administrations.
Highlighting the vision for a smart government, President Aoun explained that the goal is to serve every citizen with greater efficiency, speed, transparency, and inclusiveness. He stressed the importance of Lebanon opening up to regional and international partnerships to strengthen its digital capabilities.
Addressing Lebanon’s current state, he noted, “Lebanon has many numbers but little digitization.” He called for correcting this imbalance to ensure that the country remains a strong challenge and urged collaboration to build what he termed the “digital republic.”
