Thousands of Malaysians took to the streets in the capital, Kuala Lumpur, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim due to “unfulfilled promises and recent controversies regarding his administration.”
Bloomberg reported that despite heavy rain, around 20,000 people gathered, led by opposition parties, at the iconic Independence Square in Kuala Lumpur.
Police pledged to facilitate the protests and implemented traffic diversions.
This is the first major march targeting the prime minister since he took office in 2022 and the largest demonstration since 2018.
Anwar, who leads the multiracial People's Justice Party, faces criticism over rising living costs, his recent handling of judicial appointments, and attempts to seek immunity from civil lawsuits amid allegations including “sexual harassment among other matters.”
No Malaysian prime minister has completed a full five-year term since 2018, as the Southeast Asian nation continues to experience political instability.
