A police officer has been killed in an attack by jihadists in Iran’s restive southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan, Iranian media reported on Sunday.

According to the semi-official Tasnim news agency, the officer from Saravan died when armed militants attempted to storm a local police station.

The attackers were identified as members of Jaish al-Adl (“Army of Justice”), a Sunni jihadist group based in Pakistan and active in southeastern Iran.

Tasnim reported that three assailants were killed and two others arrested during the incident.

Sistan-Baluchistan, which borders Pakistan and Afghanistan, has long been a hotspot for clashes between Iranian security forces and insurgents, as well as drug smugglers.

The province is home to a large Baloch Sunni Muslim minority in Shiite-majority Iran.

The attack comes just weeks after gunmen stormed a courthouse in the provincial capital, Zahedan, on July 26, killing at least six people — an assault also claimed by Jaish al-Adl.

In October, 10 police officers were killed in one of the province’s deadliest attacks in recent years.
