Fifteen people were killed and 18 others injured when a tourist tram car derailed in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon.

Local media reported that the tram went off its tracks at around 6 pm local time (5 pm GMT).

The accident left 15 dead and 18 injured, 5 of them in critical condition.

The Portuguese government declared national mourning for the victims, while Lisbon’s municipality announced three days of mourning.

Footage from the scene showed the tram-like vehicle, which carries people up and down one of the hills in the capital.

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed his sorrow over the tragic accident in a statement, saying he hoped authorities would soon determine its cause.

The line, inaugurated in 1885, connects downtown Lisbon near Restauradores Square with Bairro Alto, an area famous for its nightlife. It is operated by the municipal public transport company Carris.

The two tram cars are linked at opposite ends of a pulling cable, with traction generated by electric motors in both cars.

The car at the lower end of the line did not appear to be damaged, but CNN Portugal reported that passengers had to jump out of its windows during the accident.
