The municipality of Saint-Denis, in the French capital Paris, raised the Palestinian flag on its façade at a time when France is preparing to recognize the State of Palestine.

The Palestinian flag was hoisted on the façade of the Saint-Denis town hall. The mayor, Mathieu Hanotin, was accompanied by the First Secretary of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure.

The Socialist mayor said: “This is not a long-term activist act; we chose to do this at this moment. It is time to recognize the State of Palestine,” describing the day as “historic.”

The Palestinian flag was also raised on the façades of other French municipal buildings, notably in Nantes. Socialist mayor Johanna Rolland wrote: “This evening, the President of the Republic will announce at the United Nations the recognition of the State of Palestine. We support this historic decision of the French Republic by raising the Palestinian flag for this day.”

The French newspaper Le Figaro reported that 21 French municipalities raised the Palestinian flag on their buildings, according to the Ministry of the Interior, despite warnings from Minister Bruno Retailleau, who instructed mayors to adhere to the “principle of neutrality of public services.”
