Committee Participation at Risk Over Election Law

9/24/2025 10:15:00 AM

A meeting was held yesterday on the sidelines of the press conference regarding Article 112 of the Election Law, during which MPs discussed potential escalatory measures if the repeated expedited law concerning expatriate voting is not included on the agenda of the upcoming legislative session. Measures under consideration included withdrawing from the subcommittee tasked with studying election laws and suspending participation in its work.

According to sources, MPs argued during the discussions that reviewing an expedited repeated law in the committee before presenting it to the full chamber constitutes a violation of Parliament’s internal rules, which require that the law first pass through the general assembly before being referred to the committee if its expedited status lapses.

MTV also learned that today’s meeting of the Parliament Bureau is expected to include calls for placing the issue of expatriate voting on the legislative session agenda, in order to finalize the fate of the elections and safeguard expatriates’ right to vote, amid intentions by some to postpone the process.

Next steps by MPs are expected to be announced once the agenda is officially received following the Bureau’s session.
