The world’s longest bridge opened to traffic this morning in Guizhou Province in southwestern China, reducing travel time across a deep valley from two hours to just two minutes after three years of construction.

According to the Chinese news agency Xinhua, the Huajiang Grand Valley Bridge rises 625 meters above the Beipan River in the mountainous terrain of Guizhou Province, making it about nine times longer than San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge.

Authorities in Guizhou Province stated that the project, with a main span of 1,420 meters, has become the longest suspension bridge with steel cable-stayed spans in mountainous terrain in the world.

The 2,890-meter-long structure stretches over the Huajiang Grand Valley, known as the “Earth’s Rift,” and is the latest addition to the rapidly expanding infrastructure network of the world’s second-largest economy.
