Minister of Interior and Municipalities Ahmad Al-Hajjar reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to holding the 2026 parliamentary elections on schedule in May, in accordance with the current electoral law. He emphasized that the constitutional deadlines outlined in the law will be respected, noting that the final date for diaspora voter registration is set for November 20.
Speaking after today’s legislative session at Parliament, Minister Al-Hajjar recalled previous doubts about the feasibility of holding municipal and local elections, saying: “There was skepticism about whether those elections would take place, yet we conducted them on time.”
Hajjar further revealed that coordination with the Minister of Foreign Affairs had begun weeks ago, and that the registration mechanism for Lebanese expatriates has already been finalized. "We hope that once the Foreign Minister returns from abroad, the registration process can officially begin within days, giving us approximately one month and 20 days to complete it,” he stated.
Al-Hajjar also pointed out that the Cabinet has assigned a ministerial committee to study the electoral law, of which he is a member. “We presented a report detailing the challenges involved in implementing the law. However, the Cabinet has not taken a decision to draft a new electoral law. Therefore, as Minister of Interior, I am bound to implement the current law and adhere to the registration deadlines in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” Al-Hajjar concluded.
