A “devastating” explosion at an explosives manufacturing facility in Tennessee left several dead and missing.
Chris Davis, sheriff of Humphreys County, said at a press conference that the blast occurred at the company “Accurite Energetic Systems in McEwen,” about 80 kilometers west of Nashville.
“We currently have a number of people missing… and some are presumed dead,” he added.
Tennessee’s Emergency Management Agency confirmed there were injuries but did not provide numbers because the Department of Health had not yet verified them.
Authorities have not determined the cause of the explosion, which Davis described as “devastating,” and he said the investigation could take several days.
Jim Betts, the town mayor, told ABC News that 13 people had been reported missing.
Aerial footage showed that the blast destroyed one of the facility’s buildings on the hillside and left debris and rising smoke.
Some residents of nearby Lobelville told The Associated Press that they felt their homes shake from the explosion.
