The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in the Philippines announced that the death toll from the two earthquakes that struck the southern part of the country has risen to seven, with more than 300 injured.

The agency said the earthquakes, measuring 7.4 and 6.8 on the Richter scale, occurred off the coast of the city of Manay in Davao Oriental province, about 1,000 kilometers south of the capital Manila, with a roughly 12-hour interval between them. More than 200,000 people were affected by the tremors.

Authorities explained that three people were killed in Mati city, including a woman whose house wall collapsed on her, while two workers died in the town of Pantukan while working in a mine, in addition to two victims in each of Davao city and Tarragona town.

Reports indicated that most of the injured suffered bruises and trauma from falling debris, while others experienced panic attacks, hyperventilation, and fainting, including students who were inside their schools during the first earthquake around 9:43 a.m. local time. The second earthquake occurred at 7:12 p.m.

Rescue teams continue to assess the damage and provide aid to affected areas, while authorities warned of possible aftershocks in the coming hours.
