U.S. Envoy on 1983 Marine Barracks Attack: Lebanon Must Reclaim Its Sovereignty

U.S. envoy Tom Barrack published a statement marking the anniversary of the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing, one of the deadliest attacks on American forces overseas.
“On October 23, 1983, 241 U.S. Marines, sailors, and soldiers, 58 French military personnel, and six Lebanese civilians were killed when a suicide bomber destroyed the Marine barracks in Beirut — one of the deadliest attacks on Americans overseas. We honor their memory by remembering the lesson: Lebanon must resolve its own divisions and reclaim its sovereignty. America cannot — and must not — repeat the mistakes of that past,” Barrack wrote.
His message comes on the 42nd anniversary of the attack, which remains a defining moment in both Lebanese and American history, highlighting the heavy cost of foreign entanglement and the need for Lebanon to restore its unity and independence.
