U.S. appointment reflects shifting priorities in the Middle East

MTV’s correspondent in Washington reported that the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee has just voted to advance the nomination of Joel Rayburn for the position of Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, succeeding Barbara Leaf, who resigned earlier this year.

Rayburn is considered one of the key diplomats closely aligned with former President Donald Trump’s administration. He previously held positions at the National Security Council and the Department of Defense, in addition to serving as Special Envoy for Syria during Trump’s first term.

The appointment signals a shift in Washington’s approach to Middle East policy, from Lebanon and Syria to Iran and Iraq.
