Aoun to Aboul Gheit: Lebanon Remains Committed to the Ceasefire and Regional Stability

President of the Republic Joseph Aoun welcomed Arab League Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, at Baabda Palace, where discussions focused on the rapidly evolving regional situation, Lebanon’s position on recent developments, and its diplomatic efforts with Arab and friendly nations to pressure Israel to halt its attacksand adhere to the ceasefire agreement reached nearly a year ago.
Aboul Gheit was accompanied by Assistant Secretary-General Ambassador Ahmed Zakiand a delegation from the League. Following the meeting, Aboul Gheit said he was “honored to meet President Aoun,” noting that his visit to Lebanon coincided with his participation in two major events, a conference on Arab-European cooperation against terrorism hosted by Lebanon’s Command and Staff College, and the Arab Media Forum taking place tomorrow.
He added: “Our discussion with President Aoun was analytical and comprehensive. I sensed strong confidence from him that Lebanon is on the right path and that its future is promising. He briefed me on his recent meetings with U.S. envoy Morgan Ortagus and the Egyptian intelligence chief, and shared his perspective on Lebanon’s current climate.”
Aboul Gheit also noted that the United States is showing renewed determination to lead Middle East peace efforts, saying: “There is clear American engagement to prevent Israel from acting unilaterally as it did in past years. I agreed with President Aoun that the situation overall is moving in a positive direction.”
Asked about potential Egyptian-American coordination to support Lebanon, Aboul Gheit confirmed that “such an assessment is largely accurate.” However, he downplayed fears of renewed war in Lebanon, stating: “While the risk exists, I personally find it highly unlikely, given the ongoing dialogue with Washington, which is pressing Israel to abandon its five demands and refrain from violating Lebanese territory.”
Later, President Aoun met with former minister and MP Boutros Harb, with discussions focusing on domestic political developments.
The President also received Lebanese visual artist Pascale Massoud, accompanied by engineer Tony Khaled Massoud and Imad Mchoun, who briefed the President on her efforts to promote fine arts in Lebanon and maintain the country’s status as a regional hub for artistic creativity.
