German FM visits Rajji, reaffirms support for Lebanon’s sovereignty

Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji met with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul with whom he held bilateral talks followed by an expanded meeting attended by German Ambassador Kurt Georg Stöckl-Stillfried and members of both delegations. Discussions covered key developments in Lebanon and the region, as well as bilateral relations and means to strengthen cooperation.
Wadephul said his visit aimed to “closely assess how Germany can help promote stability in Lebanon, which is key to regional stability.” He condemned “the ongoing Israeli attacks on Lebanese territory,” stressing that “Israel must respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and adhere, along with Hezbollah, to the arrangements for halting hostilities.”
The German Minister also praised the Lebanese government’s decision to restrict arms to state authority, affirming Germany’s support for efforts to extend state control nationwide.
In turn, Minister Raggi urged Germany to “press Israel to cease its aggression and withdraw from occupied Lebanese territories,” emphasizing that “a diplomatic, not military, solution is the only path to lasting stability.” He reiterated that “the government remains committed to disarmament through gradual steps, with the Lebanese Army fully performing its duties.”
Talks also addressed the Syrian displacement issue, with both sides agreeing on the need to ensure refugees’ safe return, and discussed post-UNIFIL arrangements and enhanced cultural and educational cooperation.
