The Ministry of Environment issued a statement saying it is closely following the reports regarding the incident at Jeita Grotto, a unique natural site and nationally recognized landmark that requires the highest level of protection and care.

The Ministry clarified that Jeita Grotto falls administratively under the authority of the Ministry of Tourism, which directly coordinates with the Municipality of Jeita and the relevant parties responsible for operating and managing the site. The Ministry of Environment, therefore, does not hold direct executive authority over the grotto’s management. However, it is responsible for monitoring any potential environmental impact resulting from incidents or activities related to the site.

The statement noted that the Ministry will be taking part, through its team of specialists, in the committee formed to assess the environmental consequences of the incident and to provide the necessary scientific recommendations to safeguard the site and preserve its geological formations.

It concluded by reaffirming the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to protecting natural resources and strengthening cooperation among the concerned ministries and institutions in the public interest.
