Speed Radars Activated, Patrols Increased, Strict Measures Enforced

The Ministry of Interior and Municipalities issued the following statement:
Following the meeting of the National Road Safety Committee and in the interest of public safety, Interior and Municipalities Minister Ahmad al-Hajjar sent several letters containing the committee’s recommendations, to be followed up with the relevant parties, addressed to:
- General Directorate of Internal Security Forces: To develop a short-term plan to enhance traffic unit procedures, activate patrols and speed radars, strengthen mechanisms for controlling traffic violations, driving under the influence of alcohol, and speeding, and to improve road monitoring to ensure drivers possess all required documents, such as vehicle registration and driving licenses.
- General Directorate of Civil Defense: To enhance the competencies of Internal Security Forces and Civil Defense personnel in handling incidents involving electric and immobilized vehicles.
- Ministry of Public Works and Transport: To incorporate the committee’s recommendations into the master plan, ensuring that all road-related projects assess potential traffic hazards and implement measures to protect road users during construction.
- Ministry of Economy and Trade: To recommend a study of the current state of mandatory insurance from all aspects (legal, health, financial, and regulatory).
- Ministry of Finance: To recommend stricter measures to prevent the import of unroadworthy vehicles that pose a danger to public safety.
- Ministry of Industry: To submit to the committee the technical specifications for safe helmets that provide protection from impacts while riding motorcycles and bicycles.
- Governors: To circulate guidance to municipalities and municipal unions to take appropriate measures to organize traffic within municipal boundaries, inspect the safety of school buses and public transport, and prevent encroachments on sidewalks and public passages.
- Authority for Road, Vehicle, and Machinery Management: To prepare a specifications manual aimed at reactivating the traffic control center and operational traffic signals and cameras in Beirut, as well as to provide updates on the status of mechanical inspection centers and the stages completed in preparing the specifications manual needed to reactivate mechanical inspections.
- Secretary of the National Road Safety Committee: To expedite the establishment of the National Road Safety Observatory and begin preparing detailed periodic reports on traffic accidents.
- Head of the Committee Preparing the Organizational Project for Implementing the Municipal Police Development Project: To enhance the role of the municipal police in traffic violation control and road safety, and to develop guides and training programs specific to the municipal police’s role in traffic and road safety.
