The municipalities of Baalbek and Douris celebrated Lebanon’s 82nd Independence Day by raising the national flag at the southern entrance of Baalbek near the Jibli roundabout in Douris. The ceremony was held under the patronage of Army Commander General Rudolf Heikal, represented by Brigadier General Yahya al-Kurdi, and was attended by MPs Yanal Solh and Ghazi Zaiter, Drid Hallani representing Baalbek-Hermel Governor Bachir Khodr, Douris Mayor Maroun Njeim, and a range of religious, social, and community leaders.

During the event, MP Yanal Solh praised the Lebanese Army’s recent statement, describing it as a bold declaration of the army’s position in defending Lebanon against external threats. He said the statement had unsettled some abroad, but emphasized that Lebanon stands firmly behind its army, its independence, and its national role. Solh underscored that the army must remain a strong force capable of protecting Lebanon’s sovereignty and the dignity of its people.

He added that sovereignty is not a bargaining chip, a political talking point, or a number on a map drawn elsewhere. “Sovereignty is the core of our existence and our red line,” he said. “It is our natural right to live on free land whose dignity cannot be compromised.” Saliba also stressed that Lebanon’s borders are not negotiable or subject to change under pressure, noting that they were drawn by history and sealed by the blood of the army, the resistance, and the Lebanese people.
