Russia’s embassy in France is communicating with the family of at least one of the four people arrested on suspicion of spying for a foreign country.
The Paris prosecutor confirmed two of the four people have Russian nationality, identifying one of them as “Anna N”.
Anna N founded SOS Donbass, an organisation that says on its website it’s a “community of volunteers and activists with the goal of aiding the civilian population of the combat zone in Eastern Ukraine”.
France’s DGSI intelligence agency has been surveilling Anna N since January on the belief she was gathering intelligence, including approaching “executives of various French companies in order to obtain information relating to French economic interests”, the prosecutor said.
French authorities have not “officially informed the diplomatic mission of the arrest or the reasons for it”, Russia’s state news agency TASS reported, adding the embassy is “closely monitoring the situation”.
