Military personnel in Benin, West Africa, announced on national television the dismissal of President Patrice Talon from his duties. The soldiers said they had managed to seize control of power.
This occurred before foreign agencies and media reported that "the President of Benin is safe and the army has regained control of the situation."
Benin’s Foreign Minister told Reuters, "There is an attempted coup, but the situation is under control," noting that "a large part of the army and the national guard remains loyal to the state and is controlling the situation."
The coup attempt reportedly began in the early hours of today with an attack on the President’s residence in the capital, Porto-Novo.
