Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi expressed his gratitude for the invitation extended to him by his Lebanese counterpart, Youssef Raggi, but expressed surprise at Raggi’s decision not to welcome Iran’s initiative.
Araghchi noted in a statement that foreign ministers of countries with “fully fraternal” diplomatic relations do not need to hold meetings in “neutral” locations, considering this position raises some questions.
He added that, in light of “exposure to the Israeli occupation and the ongoing violations of the ceasefire,” he fully understands the reasons that might prevent the Lebanese foreign minister from being ready to visit Tehran. Nevertheless, Araghchi expressed his willingness to visit Beirut, noting that Iran “will gladly” accept Raggi’s invitation to visit Lebanon, while emphasizing the importance of a “new beginning” in bilateral relations between the two countries. He also added that this process will rely on the principles outlined by Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi.
Araghchi sought to emphasize that Iran aims to strengthen relations with Lebanon based on solid diplomatic foundations that align with the mutual interests of the two countries, at a time when the region continues to experience tensions and ongoing conflicts, particularly with the Israeli occupation and the violations affecting Lebanese and Palestinian territories.
