Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee said in a post on X that the Israeli military revealed details of a naval commando operation carried out about a year ago in the town of Batroun in northern Lebanon, roughly 140 kilometers from Israel’s northern border. The operation, dubbed “Behind the Lines,” was conducted by fighters from the navy’s elite Unit 13 under the direction of naval intelligence.
According to Adraee, the operation led to the capture of Imad Amhaz, described as a key figure in Hezbollah’s secret maritime program and a member of the group’s coastal missile unit, known as Unit 7900. Amhaz was transferred to Israel for interrogation.
Adraee said that as part of his role in the coastal missile unit, Amhaz received military training in both Iran and Lebanon and acquired extensive maritime experience intended for naval operations. He also trained at Lebanon’s civilian maritime institute Marvasti, which Adraee described as another example of Hezbollah exploiting Lebanese civilian institutions to advance its activities.
During questioning, Amhaz revealed that he held a central role in the secret maritime program and provided sensitive intelligence about it, Adraee said. He described the project as one of Hezbollah’s most sensitive and closely guarded initiatives, focused on building an organized maritime infrastructure under civilian cover with the aim of targeting Israeli and international interests.
Adraee added that the secret maritime project was directly overseen by Hezbollah’s former secretary general Hassan Nasrallah and senior military commander Fouad Shukur, both of whom were killed during the war, as well as Ali Abdel Hassan Noureddine, identified as the official responsible for the program. He said that following the disruption of the project’s leadership and the intelligence provided by Amhaz, the Israeli military was able to impede the program at a critical stage, preventing it from becoming fully established.
He also said that Hezbollah continues to develop its maritime capabilities with ideological and material support from Iran, arguing that instead of investing large sums in rebuilding Lebanon and its institutions, the money is being channeled into the group’s activities.
Adraee concluded by saying that the Israeli army will continue to operate on all fronts and use all available means to eliminate threats against Israeli citizens.
He also shared a video showing Amhaz's confessions, along with footage of how the abduction operation was carried out.
