French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday called for a peaceful transition of power in Venezuela after the United States arrested the president, saying Venezuelans could only "rejoice" at the end of "the dictatorship of (Nicolas) Maduro," according to Agence France-Presse.

Macron wrote on "X": "By seizing power and trampling on fundamental freedoms, Nicolas Maduro has severely damaged the dignity of his people."

He called for a "peaceful and democratic transition that respects the will of the Venezuelan people," to be led as soon as possible by Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, who was the opposition candidate for the presidential elections in the summer of 2024.
