Oil prices fell by more than $2 a barrel after President Trump said he had been told that plans for executions in Iran had stopped, easing fears of further escalation.
The drop in oil prices came as Asian shares were mostly lower on Thursday and US futures also fell, following a retreat on Wall Street driven by losses in major technology stocks.
US benchmark crude fell 3.3 percent to $59.88 a barrel, while Brent crude dropped 3.2 percent to $64.40 a barrel.
