Gold and silver prices climbed to record levels on Monday after US President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on several major European countries over their opposition to his bid to annex Greenland, triggering renewed fears of a global trade war.

Strong demand for the two metals, widely regarded as safe-haven assets, drove prices higher during early Asian trading. Gold rose to a peak of $4,690.59 per ounce, while silver surged to $94.12 per ounce, according to Agence France-Presse.
