Karami warns of imminent building collapse risk in Tripoli, rejects election delay

MP Faisal Karami said that the deadly building collapse in Tripoli was "not unexpected," noting that he had repeatedly warned of the danger posed by deteriorating structures in the city.
Speaking to the Voice of Lebanon radio station, Karami stated that more than 600 buildings in Tripoli are at risk of collapse, including around 100 in a "very critical condition," with residents lacking alternative shelter. He said repeated appeals to the state over the years went unanswered, adding that his efforts focused on preparing a comprehensive file with Tripoli Municipality to identify priorities, secure funding for rehabilitation or reconstruction, and provide emergency housing.
Karami stressed that the buildings crisis is only one of several chronic problems facing Tripoli, alongside water shortages and stalled development projects, attributing the situation to decades of unbalanced development. He warned that lives remain at risk unless urgent action is taken.
On the political front, Karami cautioned against any postponement of parliamentary elections, rejecting both technical and non-technical justifications, and reaffirmed that his political alignment remains unchanged ahead of any upcoming vote.
